LifeFunders for Month: January 2021
Acoustics Study
The purpose of this fundraiser is to fund a study of the church by a professional acoustics consulting firm, to recommend changes that support our growing choir program, as well as congregational singing. Our community is not wealthy, and would have trouble funding this from the church budget. However, there is a commitment to expose our children to great beauty and increase their singing confidence, and this study will be a step to enable that.
Built of Living Stones
The hymn of praise that Christ places within the heart and on the lips of the Church will be sung at the end of time in all its fullness, when all the members gather at the wedding feast of the Lamb in the heavenly Jerusalem. That same hymn is sung today by the Church whenever the liturgy is celebrated. For every time the Church gathers for prayer, she is joined to Christ’s priesthood and made one with all the saints and angels, transcending time and space. Together the members worship with the whole company of heaven, “venerating the memory of the saints” and hoping “for some part and fellowship with them”; together they eagerly await Christ’s coming in glory. The sacred liturgy is a window to eternity and a glimpse of what God calls us to be. (14-15)
The church building fosters participation in the liturgy. Because liturgical actions by their nature are communal celebrations, they are celebrated with the presence and active participation of the Christian faithful whenever possible. Such participation, both internal and external, is the faithful’s “right and duty by reason of their baptism.” The building itself can promote or hinder the “full, conscious, and active participation” of the faithful. Parishes making decisions about the design of a church must consider how the various aspects and choices they make will affect the ability of all the members to participate fully in liturgical celebrations. (31)
Music is integral to the liturgy. It unifies those gathered to worship, supports the song of the congregation, highlights significant parts of the liturgical action, and helps to set the tone for each celebration. (88)
Sing to the Lord
While individual ministers of the Liturgy, ensembles, and even choirs can be sound-enhanced through amplification methods, the only amplification of the singing assembly comes from the room itself. Given the primacy of the assembly’s song among all musical elements of the Liturgy, the acoustical properties of the worship space are critical. For this reason, specialists in acoustics should be consulted when building or modifying liturgical space. (101)
If each member of the assembly senses his or her voice joined to the entire community in a swell of collective sound, the acoustics are well suited to the purpose of a gathered community engaged in sung prayer. If, on the other hand, each person hears primarily only his or her own voice, the acoustics of the space are fundamentally deficient. (102)
Sound-absorbing building materials include carpet, porous ceiling tiles, soft wood, untreated soft stone, cast concrete or cinder block, and padded seating. Avoiding excessive use of such materials makes it easier to achieve the ideal of many voices united in song. (103)

ROME March for Life needs your help!
As
the US and other countries cower to move their marches virtually, courageous
men and women in Italy will be taking their 2021 March for Life publicly.
This
lively, joyful march takes the message of the beauty of life through the
streets of Rome. It brings together pro-lifers from all over Italy and provides
a public witness to an otherwise silenced message.
In
its 10th year, this march is more important now than ever. New
laws have recently been passed in Italy allowing abortifacient pills to be
taken at home up to 9 weeks of pregnancy. We
mustn’t let this continue! The pro-life voice needs to be heard.
Financial
support to the Rome March for Life will go towards organizing events, printing
and distributing pro-life material, hosting a rally with many pro-life leaders
at the Piazza della Madonna di Loreto, and providing virtual opportunities for
those who can’t be there.
The
organizers of the MFL will also be working to provide mass and adoration
opportunities for attendees.
Please
prayerfully consider supporting the 2021 Rome March
for Life and help them bring much needed joy through the streets of
Rome.
