Tyler Harris’s Run for the Mission of Our Lady of the Angels

Every October, thousands of crazy people sign
up to wake up super early and run 26.2 miles through the streets of Chicago.
Maybe not that crazy…what is crazy, though, is the level of poverty in Chicago’s
West Humboldt Park. Not only is it one of the poorest neighborhoods in Chicago,
but it has extremely limited access to healthy foods and quality education. However,
what’s even crazier is the miracle that is Mission of Our Lady of the Angels
(OLA), an inspiring and joy-filled Catholic community committed to serving the poor in West Humboldt
Park.

That is why I have signed up to do such a crazy
thing as running a marathon. I feel called to run and fundraise for OLA because I believe it is the best way I can draw attention to their Mission and make the miles in this October’s race matter more.
As I train and run the Chicago
Marathon in October I will be praying for and fundraising for the
Mission of Our Lady of the Angels and its surrounding
neighborhood.

I hope that you will join me in supporting the Mission of Our Lady of the Angels by prayer or by contributing financially. If you would like to make a donation, you can do so via the ‘Donate Now’ link to the right. Please consider sponsoring a mile in my marathon run (see the suggested contributions below and enter the mile # in the text box in the donation link). I will offer the mile up and pray for your intentions during that mile.

Please
consider supporting my fundraising efforts by donating to the OLA
mission!

More information about the Mission of Our Lady of the Angels:

Mission of Our Lady of
the Angels exists to provide material and spiritual support to the West
Humboldt Park, Chicago- one of the most challenged neighborhoods in the United
States. The Mission provides additional
material and pastoral support to families, youth, and senior citizens, and,
most importantly, brings the love of Christ to a neighborhood
desperately in need of hope.

Specifically, OLA provides food for about 1,000 families a month through their food pantry; provides clothing, household goods, and emergency assistance to families who need it; engages hundreds of youth in after school and summer programming; provides community and programming for area senior citizens; and creates camaraderie through community dinners and celebrations. The Mission’s commitment to the poor and passion for sharing its Catholic faith is awe-inspiring–their deep sense of purpose and joy is palpable if you only spend a couple minutes at their monthly food pantry

Funds will be used to complete
the renovation of the Mission’s new outreach center to the poor in West
Humboldt Park, Chicago.
The new outreach center will provide the very needed space for the
Mission’s donation storage/ distribution, a handicapped accessible kitchen/
dining room, meeting space for neighborhood and retreat groups, and a 60+
bedroom retreat center for volunteers and retreat guests.
